Most were blessed enough to have good devoted mothers.
Most mothers devote their time and energy to raising their children and providing a loving home, however there are as many who seem to lack that quality or ability.
When I looked up the word I was rather surprised at the meaning.
de·vo·tion
dəˈvōSH(ə)n/
noun
- love, loyalty, or enthusiasm for a person, activity, or cause."Eleanor's devotion to her husband"
synonyms: loyalty, faithfulness, fidelity, constancy, commitment, adherence, allegiance, dedication; - religious worship or observance."the order's aim was to live a life of devotion"
synonyms: devoutness, piety, religiousness, spirituality, godliness, holiness, sanctity "a life of devotion" - prayers or religious observances.plural noun: devotions
synonyms: religious worship, worship, religious observance;
The references to worship and religious observances took me off guard. I had forgotten about devotionals because I don’t read “Devotionals.” I just read The Holy Bible. I had never put a name to what I do in the morning with God. It’s just been a priority, for the past eight years, to begin my day reading His Word. I would never have thought to use the word “devoted” to this most important part of my day.
I guess it’s the same way for mothers. We do what we do, because we just do! We don’t think about it as a “have to!” We wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s our life. And when that life changes it’s difficult to redefine our life; so wrapped up in motherhood - we lose ourselves.
Often time it takes the change; the loss to turn us to God. It’s most often a storm that drives us into His arms. Where we had been the safe harbor- we now seek the same for our own brokenness. Would that He had been our safe place all along. He was, yet we were often too busy charting our own courses to consult Him. Praise God - He knew what it would take to get us to the place where we needed Him.
It was my mother’s death that drove me to Him. She was a devoted mom to both me and my brother. Was she perfect? No, but she was perfect for us. She showed unconditional love and unwavering strength in this dark uncertain world. She was my rock. When she was gone I floundered.
Then I found out what a true foundation is; The Rock Jesus Christ! I had grown up hearing about Him, had met Him on occasion, however I had never lived for Him. I had never obeyed Him. All of my life I had only obeyed the desires of my heart; what I wanted to do, I did and oh the trouble it got me into! But He picked me up, cleaned me up, poured Himself into me and I’ve not been the same.
“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.” Matthew 7:24-27 KJV
So today, we celebrate the gift from God - our Mothers! Without them we would not be here!
Thank Him for yours whether she was good or not!
“Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)” Ephesians 6:2 KJV
We don’t honor their sins but we must honor them in obedience to God!
If you are blessed to still have your mother call her; go see her; hug her if you can. You won’t always have her.
Forgive her for the ways she may have let you down and repent for any judgments you have made against her. Then give her honor by being the best you - that she would have wanted you to be!
Give God glory for His gift of Mom!
Even so - MARANATHA
